Farm Diversification

Diversification - The process of enlarging or varying its range of products of the field of operation.

HIC - UK

Farm Shops: Customers buy produce at the farm
Redevelopment: Converting areas of farms into more practical and profitable things, like turning barns into offices
Organic Farming: Demand is growing and people are willing to pay more money for organic produce
Energy: Converting fields into the wind or solar farms
Pick-your-own: Saves money labour and transport costs
Leisure and recreation: May involve completely changing the farm or modifying fields

LIC - Kenya

Horticulture: Growing vegetables, fruit and flowers for export
GM Crops: Instead of growing organic crops, farmers grow GM crops to export to other countries
Commercial Farming: Because people and the government need more money, farms go from subsistence farming to commercial to make money and export.

HIC - UK

  • Locals can form co-ops to provide services
  • The government can provide money for sustainability
  • Buy locally produced items
  • Parks and green spaces are managed better
  • Make transport systems more accessible

LIC - Kenya

  • Upgrade housing, install piped water and sewage systems
  • Retain labourers in the countryside so there are people working on farms
  • Have international businesses invest in rural communities
  • Promote tourism with local tourist companies
  • Increase the productivity of agriculture in a 'greenway'

Managing Rural Challenges

IGOs

IGO - Intergovernmental Organisation; involves representatives from member states that have a particular interest in poor rural areas.
  • The World Bank - provides financial and technical help
  • WHO - World Health Organisation; promotes healthcare and fights diseases

NGOs

NGO - Non-Governmental Organisation; non-profit making, voluntary organization that are independent of government and often run as charities

Government Departments

  • Focus on the solution of rural problems, including development and conservation.
  • Somewhere in the government structure, there are departments responsible for what goes on in rural areas.

Local Communities

  • These are the people most affected by rural life.
  • Some people have views that are different than others.
  • Decision-making can be a long process due to this.
